The Database

About the Database

University West, Department of Nursing, Health and Culture has in 2011 established the Center on Salutogenesis. We are today responsible for the a the website www.salutogenesis.hv.se. We are running a systematic and analytical research synthesis on salutogenic research 1992-up to date. The website is a continuation of a former one located in Helsinki, Finland. The new website is now in Swedish and in English.

We continuously update the sites including the database (only in English). However, to build up and keep it  updated is time consuming. Therefore we invite authors of scientific papers published in peer reviewed journals to join us in this task. Please fill in a review protocol (in English) of your study in line with the presented model. Please send your review protocol to the Responsible Editor of the website, Monica Eriksson. We will thereafter put the information into the Database. This is a possibility for Authors to spread their findings to all of us interested in the field of salutogenesis. Thank you for your cooperation!

The association between low-socioeconomic status mother's Sense of Coherence and their child's utilization of dental care

Year
2011
Country
Brazil
Sample
Schoolchildren and their mothers
Aged 11 - 12
Method
Cross-sectional, Interviews, Self-administered questionnaires

Analysis
Multiple logistic regression, Odds ratio
Aim
To investigate the relationship of low-socioeconomic status mother's Sense of Coherence (SOC) and their child's utilization of dental care services in a city of Southeast Brazil
SOC Scale
SOC-13, 5-point Likert scale
Statistical data

N=190 (107 girls, 83 boys) + their mothers

Mean SOC (mothers) = 47.9 (SD = 6.82)

Mean SOC USDG (use of dental services group) = 48.53 (SD= 6.54)

Mean SOC NSDG (no dental services group) = 45.14 (SD = 7.40)

Mean SOC DCUG (dental check-up group) = 49.95 (SD = 6.53)

Mean SOC DTG (dental treatment group) 47.45 (SD = 6.38)

Other measures:
Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and data regarding children's dental care use. Children's oral health-related behaviours, dental status (DMFS index), dental pain, Visible Dental Plaque and Bleeding on Probing Index were registered
Language
Portuguese
Main result

Of the mothers, 81.1% reported on their child's utilization of dental care services. Of them, 42.9% considered check-ups as the main reason for taking their children to dental services. Children whose mothers had higher levels of SOC were more likely to utilize dental care services (OR = 2.08 95%CI = 1.17-3.64) and visit a dentist mainly for check-ups (except for dental treatment) (OR = 2.02 95%CI = 1.06-3.81) than those whose mothers had lower levels of SOC. These findings were adjusted for socioeconomic status, children's oral health-related behaviours and oral health measures.

Conclusions: Mother's SOC was a psychosocial factor associated with their child's pattern of use of dental care services in low-socioeconomic status families.
